One of the "great" saints of our Church, Saint John the Baptist, lived an ascetic life in the desert of Judah until the age of 30. Through the phrase "Repent, the Kingdom of the Heaven is at hand" prepared the ground of the advent of Jesus. This is why Christians commonly refer to John as the precursor or forerunner of Jesus.
