-
The miracle
While building the monastery, Saint Athanasius was faced with a shortage of food, money, and building materials. He was about to leave the monastery when he saw a woman in a veil approaching him. She asked him why he was considering leaving, and he told her about his worries. She told him to return to the monastery and that she would help him. She then asked him to strike his staff on a rock, and a spring of water gushed forth. The water was said to be refreshing and healed many illnesses.
